The artist I chose for my EMP research is Jacob Coiller, he is a British musician and his genre/style is a mix of jazz, funk, electronica, Nu-Jazz and multitude of others. He is notable for his arrangement skill, extraordinary use of harmony and his custom built vocoder and is revered by some of the jazz communities elite like Herbie Hancock and Quincy Jones. His music is definitely a product of the 21st century but in saying that he definitely throws back to the styles of Motown and “classic” Jazz. The song I chose from his work is a cover he did of PYT by Michael Jackson(linked below) in the cover he utilises a plethora instruments and sounds both synthesised and acoustic. The main captivating characteristics in this song are the bass, rhythm, vocals and synth. He builds a funk groove using the bass and drums, the vocals especially in the chorus are so accurately timed and pitched that it’s almost like a wave when the vocals enter thats also due to some really cleaver performance and the synths in this particular song I think are used to create sound scape as well be a feature in the song, the sounds he makes are very interesting, he also uses some really cleaver filtering techniques and sound sweeps throughout the song for example in very beginning he uses a low pass filter sweep to intro the song and at 2:25 of the song I think he uses several synth sounds and warped audio samples to transition from one section of the song to another. As a whole his music is very abstract and he utilises the complete sonic landscape.
