Last week in the studio I was assistant engineer, I basically helped choose and patch out-board gear, as well as set up mics and general set up and pack down of the studio. I enjoyed working with the team in the studio and think we all performed well within our roles. I made the conscious decision to focus on the out-board gear and patch bay because firstly it was a new patch bay, with different equipment that I had not used before and secondly I myself wish to start building an inventory consisting of some of the hardware that we have in the studio, so I used my role as a way to also research potential purchases. To begin I discovered a whole new meaning to the saying “a good pre-amp is the way to go”(or a quote something of that nature) We used several pieces of outboard gear but my favourites were the 6176 Universal Audio vintage channel strip and the BAE 1073 dual channel stereo mic pre. They both showed me the difference a mic pre can make to a sound, I really liked the 6176 because of its versatility, not only is it a mic pre it’s also a compressor and has some EQ options as well, so just by patching it through you can mould the sound to your liking before it hits Pro Tools. Bringing it to a close, we chained together several pieces of equipment to get our recorded drum sound for this project and I think we achieved what we had set out to do from the beginning.
